8th BERYL is a Fashion business that makes and designs clothes for women and children of all age groups.

We continually look for ways to give back to the community through training sessions. And so a great opportunity arose when we met Ada, she is a deaf girl of about 19 years who had just graduated from Senior Secondary school.

Her dream has always been to become a Fashion Designer and her parents enrolled her in a Tailor’s shop within their neighborhood to commence her apprenticeship.

Unfortunately, she found it difficult to understand the many techniques taught because her boss did not understand sign language and so, could not effectively explain the procedures and calculations that are involved in sewing.

When we met her, it was a dream come true for her because not only do we understand American and Nigerian Sign Language, but we actively associate with the DEAF community and so we decided to take it a step further by teaching her how to sew in sign language and we are happy that today, Caroline is a professional Fashion designer.

According to a 2020 UN report, there are 9.5 million deaf Nigerians and 35% are women between 18-35 years. Our research indicates that Caroline is just one among many deaf individuals who have struggled with learning Fashion and design and sad to say, some have even given up due to language barriers.

We decided to begin THE INCLUSIVE SEWING TUTORIAL on YouTube, where we teach how to sew in SIGN LANGUAGE with the hope of reaching the Deaf Community globally and teaching them how to sew through our videos.

So far, we have gotten amazing results and this is spurring us to do more, however, as you would see from our videos, we need to improve the video quality and make them more visually appealing to enhance learning among the Deaf.

We also plan to establish a skill acquisition center where we can teach the Deaf who have no Internet access how to sew FREE OF CHARGE.

8th BERYL recognizes that we cannot achieve this goal alone, and so we need your kind donations to support our project. Your donations will take us a step closer to purchasing the photography and video editing tools required to produce better quality tutorial videos and purchase machinery and equipment to establish the skill acquisition center for offline classes.

These offline classes involve Literacy classes too, as we aspire to train deaf from poor backgrounds who have little or no access to formal education.

Would you kindly consider donating 1,000 (one thousand) Naira (You can choose to donate more out of your goodwill) to help us make this impact?
